Roddy Sorrell, a resident of New Castle, Indiana, experienced a catastrophic medical condition known as necrotizing pancreatitis, a disease where parts of the pancreas begin to die due to inflammation and loss of blood flow. During his hospitalization, Sorrell’s blood pressure dropped to 78 over 52, a level doctors recognize as potentially life-threatening.

At the same time, Roddy  Sorrell was experiencing severe opioid withdrawal after years of prescribed opioid medications related to chronic medical treatment and repeated hospitalizations.

The combination of pancreatitis, dehydration, and opioid withdrawal created a medical crisis that nearly ended his life.

In his memoir, A Marijuana Epiphany: How Pot Saved My Life, Roddy Sorrell describes the physical and emotional toll addiction can take, the stigma patients often face when addiction becomes part of their medical record, and the difficult path toward recovery.

After years of struggling with opioids and alcohol, Roddy Sorrell says cannabis became the turning point that allowed him to step away from both substances and begin rebuilding his life.

Today, Roddy Sorrell speaks openly about the opioid crisis and advocates for cannabis reform, particularly in Indiana, where marijuana remains illegal while surrounding states such as Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio have legalized cannabis and are generating billions in tax revenue.

Sorrell has also written open letters to national and state leaders, including the President of the United States and Indiana’s governor, urging policymakers to reconsider cannabis laws and explore alternatives that may help individuals struggling with addiction and chronic pain.

Through his book and public advocacy, Roddy B. Sorrell hopes to start conversations about addiction recovery, patient choice, and whether cannabis could serve as a safer alternative for some people battling opioid dependency.
